I also used the new wide Zhik toestrap. Over the last few years I’ve seen homemade versions of this (essentially two straps joined together down the length), but only recently have they been commercially available. With my 30th birthday being a few weeks ago (and my now being eligible for Masters racing) it seemed a good time to try and make hiking more comfortable. I’m fairly tall (6’1) so sail with quite a tight strap which has caused some ankle pain in the past, and this new strap should distribute load around my feet, making hiking slightly more forgiving.
I did like this new addition but I can see for most people it being a case of personal preference, with differing hiking styles and toestrap tensions playing a big role and finding the right setup. If you have someone at your club who has one of these, jump in their boat and the answer should be obvious pretty quickly. If you find like me, it makes an otherwise uncomfortable thing, slightly less so, then it’s worth every penny
